Bellechasse: a region made for walking
The Bellechasse region of Chaudière-Appalaches offers exceptional terrain for hikers. Between the agricultural plain running along the St. Lawrence River and the forested Appalachian ridges rising inland, the diversity of landscapes is striking. From Saint-Léon-de-Standon, two major networks are accessible: the Standon Trails just minutes on foot, and the Massif du Sud Regional Park about twenty minutes by car.
Whether you're a beginner looking for a gentle stroll or an experienced hiker seeking breathtaking views and a real workout, you'll find what you're looking for here — in every season.
Standon Trails: nature steps from the inn
Located directly in Saint-Léon-de-Standon, the Standon Trails are the daily playground for village residents — and the best-kept secret among our guests. These trails follow the Etchemins River, climb through mature woodland and offer immediate immersion in nature, with no car or admission ticket required.
- Access: on foot from the inn — no driving needed
- Elevation: moderate, accessible for families and beginners
- Atmosphere: forest trails along the river, rustic bridges, absolute silence
- Highlights: birdwatching, views of Etchemins River meanders, spectacular autumn colours
- Admission: free and open access
This is our favourite for a morning outing before breakfast, or an evening stroll after dinner. Nature photographers also find beautiful opportunities here at sunrise.
Massif du Sud Regional Park: Appalachian summits
20–25 minutes by car from the inn, the Massif du Sud Regional Park in Saint-Philémon is the region's flagship hiking destination. Its trails climbing to Appalachian ridges offer some of the most beautiful panoramas in all of Chaudière-Appalaches.
- Network: several dozen kilometres of marked trails, from family walks to technical ascents
- Elevation: variable — from flat forest paths to summits with significant gain
- Highlights: 360° panoramas over the Appalachians, mixed and boreal forest, exceptional biodiversity
- Seasons: magnificent in summer, spectacular in autumn, accessible by snowshoe in winter
- Admission: access fee required, available online on the park's website
Our recommendation for a first visit: the trail to the main lookout for a panoramic view over the valley. Allow 3 to 4 hours return at a family pace.
Hiking by season: when to go?
Bellechasse is great for hiking year-round — each season has its charms:
- Spring (April–May): the forest turns green, waterways run high, migratory birds stop by — trails can be muddy in April
- Summer (June–August): ideal conditions, dry trails, long days — watch for heat on exposed ridges
- Autumn (September–October): the crown season in Bellechasse — maple and birch foliage transforms the landscape into a masterpiece; views from Massif du Sud are unforgettable
- Winter (December–March): Massif du Sud trails become snowshoe and cross-country ski routes — a silent, magical experience
Our 5 host tips for a great hike
As innkeepers at the heart of Bellechasse, we share these tips with all our hiking guests:
- Start with the Standon Trails. If you're discovering the region, this free outing from the inn is the best way to get a feel for the terrain before tackling Massif du Sud.
- Buy your Massif du Sud access pass online. Skip the entrance queue — online tickets guarantee your entry even during busy periods.
- Bring more water than you think you need. The ascents in Bellechasse are more demanding than they look on the map. Minimum 1.5 L per person for a 3–4 hour outing.
- Wear waterproof boots. Even in summer, forest trails run through wetland areas. A good waterproof hiking shoe transforms the experience.
- Check the weather, but go anyway. Misty mornings on the Massif du Sud ridges are magical. A light drizzle on the Standon trails is an experience in itself — just bring a light rain jacket.
Hiking weekend: two days in Bellechasse
Our ideal itinerary for a hiking weekend:
- Saturday morning: Morning walk on Standon Trails from the inn (1.5–2 hours) before or after breakfast
- Saturday afternoon: Drive to Massif du Sud for an ascent to the lookout (3–4 hours)
- Saturday evening: Back to the inn, outdoor spa, dinner at Microbrasserie de Bellechasse
- Sunday: Canoe-kayak on the Etchemins River, cycling on the Cycloroute, or visit Miller Zoo
Au Vieux Presbytère: the ideal base camp
Our inn is literally at the trailhead for Standon Trails and 20 minutes from Massif du Sud — hard to find a better-situated base for a Bellechasse hiking stay.
After the effort, our outdoor spa is waiting for your tired legs. Our rooms are quiet, the beds generous. And the next morning, Murielle and Jacques prepare a hearty breakfast with local Bellechasse products — local eggs, artisan bread, homemade jams — exactly what you need to head back out on the trails.
